But what IS an estuary?

An estuary is a unique and ecologically significant coastal ecosystem where freshwater from rivers and streams meets and mixes with saltwater from the ocean. It is a transition zone between land and sea, characterized by constantly changing water levels and salinity levels. Estuaries can be found in coastal regions worldwide and play a vital role in supporting various plant and animal species.

Estuaries are often teeming with life due to the abundance of nutrients carried by freshwater from inland areas. These nutrients support the growth of phytoplankton and other microorganisms, serving as food for various aquatic species. Estuaries are also important nursery grounds for many fish species and provide critical habitats for migratory birds and other wildlife.

Such wildlife can be seen on either the Mink River tour with the Door County Adventure or while renting kayaks at our Rowleys Bay Resort location. Wisconsin is home to only two estuaries and Door County is lucky enough to be home to one of them.

Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will be in awe of the Mink River Estuary’s avian diversity. The estuary provides a vital stopover point for migratory birds, making it a prime spot for birdwatching during the spring and fall migrations.
