But what IS an estuary?
An estuary is a unique and ecologically significant coastal ecosystem where freshwater from rivers and streams meets and mixes with saltwater from the ocean. It is a transition zone between land and sea, characterized by constantly changing water levels and salinity levels. Estuaries can be found in coastal regions worldwide and play a vital role in supporting various plant and animal species.
Estuaries are often teeming with life due to the abundance of nutrients carried by freshwater from inland areas. These nutrients support the growth of phytoplankton and other microorganisms, serving as food for various aquatic species.
